AOD Trunnion Ring Repair & Maintenance

SERVICE OVERVIEW

What AOD Trunnion Ring Repair & Maintenance Actually Involves

The AOD (Argon Oxygen Decarburisation) trunnion ring is the structural backbone that holds the AOD vessel in its tilting mechanism. It absorbs the full weight of the vessel and its melt during charging, blowing, and tapping — and it does this through trunnion shafts and bores that must stay true to extremely close tolerances if the vessel is to tilt smoothly and the drive system is not to be overloaded.

Over an AOD vessel's service life, the trunnion ring bores and shaft journals wear. The bores can develop ovality or taper; the shaft journals lose their surface finish and roundness. When this happens, bearing life drops dramatically, drive torque requirements increase, and — in severe cases — the vessel can become difficult to control during tilt.

Repair and maintenance of AOD trunnion ring components is almost always done in-situ. The vessel is held in the tilting frame, the trunnion ring is accessible from the side, and portable line boring and journal grinding equipment is set up around it. The repair happens during the planned maintenance shutdown without removing the vessel from the bay.

CAPABILITIES

What We Repair on AOD Trunnion Rings

  • Trunnion ring bore machining — re-boring worn or oval trunnion ring bores to correct diameter and geometric tolerance for new bearing fits.
  • Trunnion shaft journal grinding — in-situ grinding of trunnion shaft journals to restore diameter, roundness, and surface finish.
  • Bearing housing face machining — correcting bearing housing seating faces for flatness and perpendicularity to prevent misalignment loads.
  • Drive shaft bore and face repair — machining the bores and faces that locate the tilting drive gearbox to the trunnion ring.
  • Laser alignment of trunnion axis — verifying and correcting the trunnion shaft axis alignment to the vessel centreline and drive system.
  • Full dimensional survey — CMM and portable measurement of all critical trunnion ring geometry before and after repair.

WHY ON-SITE

Why AOD Trunnion Repair Is Always Done In-Situ

An AOD vessel in its tilting frame is a fixed installation. Removing it for workshop repair involves decommissioning the vessel lining, major rigging, structural modification, and weeks of work — far beyond what a planned maintenance shutdown allows. The repair has to happen in place.

In-situ repair also preserves alignment references. The trunnion ring's relationship to the tapping floor, the lance system, and the ladle handling path are all defined by its installed position. Moving the vessel and reinstalling it would require re-establishing all of those references.

Where This Matters Most

  • AOD-CLU and K-OBM vessels
  • Ladle furnace trunnion rings

HOW WE WORK

Our Process for AOD Trunnion Ring Repair

01

Dimensional Survey

We measure trunnion bore diameters, ovality, taper, and shaft journal geometry using CMM and portable instruments to establish the full picture of wear.

02

Repair Plan

We define bore target sizes, journal undersize dimensions, bearing specifications, and machining sequence in advance, agreed with the metallurgical and maintenance teams.

03

In-Situ Machining

Boring bars are set up spanning the trunnion ring. Bores are machined to target, journals are ground, and faces are corrected — all measured in-process.

04

Alignment & Report

Laser alignment of the repaired trunnion axis is carried out and a full dimensional inspection report is issued before the shutdown ends.

QUESTIONS WE GET ASKED

AOD Trunnion Ring Repair: Common Questions

Can AOD trunnion ring bores be machined with the vessel in the frame?

Yes. This is the standard approach. Portable line boring bars are set up through both trunnion bores simultaneously, referenced from the existing bore centrelines, and bore to the new diameter. The vessel does not need to leave the bay.

How much bore wear is too much — when does the trunnion ring need re-machining?

The threshold depends on the original bore tolerance and the bearing type fitted. As a guide, bore ovality exceeding 0.3–0.5 mm, or clearance to bearing OD exceeding the original running clearance by more than 0.5 mm, typically warrants re-machining. We confirm the threshold after the initial measurement survey.

Can you coordinate with a scheduled AOD vessel relining shutdown?

Yes — and this is the ideal time to do it. Trunnion ring bore machining and vessel relining have similar shutdown window requirements, and combining the two avoids a separate vessel outage for the mechanical work.

Dynamics Engineering provides repair and maintenance of AOD trunnion rings on-site across Pune, Maharashtra, and PAN India. If your AOD vessel's trunnion bores, journals, or drive faces are showing wear, contact us for a measurement survey and repair assessment.
