In-Situ Crankshaft Machining

In-Situ Crankshaft Machining

Crankshaft journals and pins machined to tolerance directly on the installed engine or genset - no removal, no teardown, minimal downtime.
SERVICE OVERVIEW

What On-Site Crankshaft Machining Actually Involves

A crankshaft is one of the least forgiving parts in any rotating machine to get slightly wrong. The main journals carry the engine or genset's full load, the crank pins take the connecting rod forces, and even a few thousandths of ovality or taper on either can turn into bearing wipe, oil pressure loss, or a knock that gets worse every hour it keeps running. Once that wear shows up, the usual answer is to pull the crankshaft entirely — which on a large diesel genset, marine engine, or compressor crank means a multi-day teardown before machining even starts.

On-site crankshaft machining and in-situ crankshaft machining avoid that teardown. We bring portable grinding and machining equipment to the engine itself, regrind or machine the journals and pins in place, and in most cases the crankshaft never has to come out of the block.

This isn't a substitute for a full crank regrind when the wear is severe enough to need it — it's the right call when the damage is within a workable range and the cost of removal is the real problem, not the machining itself.

CAPABILITIES

What We Machine, and to What Tolerance

Crankshaft work in-situ covers a specific set of repairs, all aimed at getting the shaft back within its original bearing clearance and running geometry:

  • Main journals — regrinding or turning to correct ovality, taper, and surface finish, restoring the fit with the main bearings.
  • Crank pins (rod journals) — the same correction applied to the pins the connecting rods ride on, often the first place wear shows up under load.
  • Fillet radii — re-cutting the transition between journal and web to the original radius, since an incorrect fillet is a common fatigue crack starting point.
  • Thrust faces — restoring the faces that control crankshaft end-float where thrust washers or bearings locate.

We work on diesel generator crankshafts, marine engine cranks, compressor cranks, and large industrial engine crankshafts, machining to the OEM undersize/oversize tables where available, or to a measured, functional tolerance where original documentation isn't on hand.

WHY ON-SITE

Why Plants Choose In-Situ Over a Full Crank Removal

Pulling a crankshaft is a job in itself, separate from the machining that follows it. On a genset or marine engine, that means draining fluids, disconnecting the drivetrain, lifting the block components apart, and — once the crank comes out — arranging transport to a shop that can actually handle a part that size. All of that happens before a single cut is made.

Doing the work in-situ removes that entire sequence. The engine stays substantially assembled, the crankshaft stays in its bearings, and the machining crew works around the existing structure instead of taking it apart first.

Where This Matters Most

In-situ crankshaft machining earns its keep fastest on equipment where removal is a major undertaking on its own:

  • Marine main and auxiliary engines
  • Diesel generator sets
  • Large reciprocating compressors
  • Industrial stationary engines
HOW WE WORK

Our Process for On-Site & In-Situ Crankshaft Machining

Crankshaft work carries less margin for error than most on-site machining jobs, so the sequence below leans even more heavily on measurement before any cutting starts.

01

Site Assessment

We measure journal and pin wear, ovality, and taper in place, and confirm which surfaces actually need correction.

02

Machining Plan

We plan the undersize target, grinding sequence, and equipment setup based on OEM data or measured requirements.

03

On-Site Machining

Portable grinding/machining equipment is mounted in place and journals or pins are corrected in controlled passes.

04

Verification & Report

Final measurements confirm tolerance and surface finish, with an inspection report handed over for your records.

WHO WE WORK WITH

Industries We Serve

Crankshaft machining calls tend to come from operators running large reciprocating engines or compressors continuously, where an unplanned stop is expensive in itself:

Marine & Shipyards Power Generation Oil & Gas Cement & Mining Sugar & Paper Mills Railways & Rolling Stock Defence & Shipbuilding Ports & Material Handling
QUESTIONS WE GET ASKED

Crankshaft Machining: Common Questions

Can every crankshaft be machined in-situ, or does it sometimes need to come out?

Not every case is suitable. If wear or damage is severe, or the fillet radius or thrust face has deeper damage than a regrind can correct, full removal for shop machining or replacement may be the right call. We assess this on site before recommending in-situ work.

How is the crankshaft supported during on-site machining?

The crankshaft stays in its own main bearings throughout, with the portable machining equipment mounted and aligned to the journal or pin being worked on, rather than the shaft being moved to the tool.

What if we don't have the OEM undersize chart anymore?

We take our own measurements of the journals, pins, and the bearings they mate with, and machine to a tolerance that restores correct running clearance rather than guessing at a standard undersize.

Does in-situ machining fix a knocking or vibrating engine?

It corrects the journal and pin geometry that's often behind knock or vibration caused by bearing wear, but the underlying cause should be diagnosed first — machining is the fix for worn geometry, not for every possible source of engine noise.

What crankshaft sizes do you work with?

We work on crankshafts from mid-size diesel gensets up to large marine and industrial engine cranks. Send us the engine make/model and journal sizes and we'll confirm scope quickly.

Dynamics Engineering provides on-site crankshaft machining, in-situ crankshaft regrinding, and portable field machining services for plants and marine operators across Pune, Maharashtra, and PAN India. If your crankshaft needs journal or pin correction without a full teardown, get in touch for a site assessment.
